The 73 Powerstroke is easily one of the most sluggish and slow diesel trucks out there and as a daily driver. This truck feels like you’re trying to drive underwater, but what is the best way to add 150 horsepower to your 73 Power Stroke safely. Will a hydroch chip tuner is how what this tuner will do is tell the PCM to inject more fuel and air into the engine and in turn create more power and speed. So today we will be installing this hydr chip from Night Shift, diesel at Ash automotive and then testing our new 0 to 60 and towing over 5,000 lb. This is probably one of the first and best performance mods that you guys are going to want to do to your 73 power stroke and once again I bought this from Night Shift diesel.
So I’m going to be doing something that I haven’t done in a while and actually be doing the install myself I’m going to show you guys exactly how to install it. How easy it is to install it and then, at the end of this video, I’m actually going to be tuning this exact chip for this truck. First, you want to start by removing the fender liner from there you’re going to remove the three 10 mm bolts holding on the PCM. Then you can pull your PCM out then, once you get the PCM out you’re going to remove all the 5mm bolts, holding the cover on the computer, now you’re ready to scrape off your Silicone and install your hydro chip plugged in as it should, as you guys, Can see right there we get a no start. That means that the connectors on the PCM were not wire brushed down enough.
So what we’re going to do is go ahead and tune it we’re going to go ahead and plug it in here, though. Okay. So now it’s loading up here we got all the blank Tunes here, all 15 of them. We need to program, we were able to get it found here, actually called Power, hungry performance and they actually got me taken care of here. They told me my exact PCM code from every single OBS owner out there, so they all kind of have the same.
They said that it’s 200 to1. So if your truck was made in California, it’s going to be a different PCM code per emissions. If it wasn’t, then it’s going to be this exact code, it’s going to be VCA B, _. 02 click our custom Tunes now and see exactly what we want. So I do want a theft pedal Death Mode because I don’t have a kill switch on my truck.
Yet I have yet to put our honking kill switch on it, which I am going to be doing very soon, but now we’re going to do is hit program right here and that should program everything onto our actual hydr chip. Once that’s done, we’re going to put everything back together and plug our hydr chip in and our tuner in. Let’S go ahead and just wait for this to download and calibrate and then we’re going to go ahead and plug the PCM back in plug our hydr chip. In here all right guys moment the truth here we’re going to see if it starts. Oh hell, yeah, yeah, okay, cool, I plugged it in right.
Bang just like that. Hydro chip is in we’re going to fire it up. Here, I’m going to go. Rev in I’m, going to rev it in every single tune. Show you guys if it makes a sound difference and also show you guys how much coal that rolls, because I know a lot of you, kids out there like to roll coal.
But I don’t really prefer to roll coal, because it’s basically a waste of fuel so and show you guys how much more this hydr chip wakes up the 73 power stroke. So, let’s see if it works here, yep theft, death pedal mode, it’s definitely working. So Factory stock mode, which is two that shouldn’t be anything different now we’re going to go to our three mode here: Towing modified valve body 25 horsepower.
So, oh, oh, my God. It sounds so much different that Hydro wakes it up like crazy. So that’s our 25 horsepower one. Now we’re going to go to our 40 horsepower daily driver, and that is number four okay, oh my God. It is rowdy.
Now boys holy cow now, our next one is going to be our fuel sipper, and that is number five. This is the one I’m going to be kind of daily driving it on and seeing kind of how much cuz this was my fuel mileage tune on the last one, oh yeah, she sounds good. This Hydra is like night and day waking it up. Like it is so much different whisper mode, so number six, let’s see here it should whisper. Oh yeah, it’s quiet!
This is for like drive-throughs and stuff like that for seven Towing, that’s just no body modified valve body. Now, number eight is our performance tune. So this is our tune. We get after it on oh yeah. She sounds meeme boys, eight, our first performance tune.
That’S our 65 horsepower performance tune. Now we’re going to go to nine, which is our 80 horsepower performance tune. So I bet you we’re probably getting about 65 horsepower to the tire extra oh yeah, she’s, gnarly, damn boy, she wants to go. That’S for sure number 10, which is our performance team with a modified valve body, not too sure what different that does. Yeah she wants to move boys.
It definitely is woken up. The 73 I’m going to close the hood now and go ahead and drive this bad boy we’re going to go tow with it. I’M going to be Towing about 5,000 lb, showing you guys how this tune. Actually works because a lot of you guys out there are looking to actually put this tune on your truck to toe. We are going to try the actual towing with modified valve body tune, which is our number three tune.
So I’m going to see if that changes. Anything how the transmission shifts in 2.6 mil turn left onto North rway, uh-huh transmission, shift’s great I’m going to keep it in this tune, might shift a little bit earlier than I like, but as of right now it’s shifting fine, not even squatted, at all, guys we’re Ready to rumble oh yeah she’s, heavy Turbo’s lighting, good, oh sh, in a little funny there, but it’s all right accelerates great runs good, my God. She sounds so good, we’re about to go under the bridge boys, woo, 7 Tre, baby, wa, whoa waa, my God. What the hell happened, holy it just randomly went like the transmission just started going and I couldn’t get it out of gear.
What the hell was that yall guys just saw that that was odd, I’m changing it to the 10 or the uh seven mode now, and I let out of the gas I let completely out of the gas, and it just stayed in fourth gear. It stayed in that overdrive mode that was so freaking odd, holy crap that was kind of scary. We just towed for a minute and it ran good everything. Towed good transmission shifted a little bit funky. I don’t know why that is, but uh yeah.
If you guys know, let me know in the comments she sounds so freaking good, she’s home boys just like that, not even a sweat. So now that we were finished with the actual Towing aspect of the hydr chip, I want to actually test out some of the other tunes on it like the performance tune and the daily driver tune to see exactly how much better of performance that we actually got. We’Re going to try our first daily driving tune, that is number four, that is 40 extra horsepower power and we’re going to see how that rides a little bit more py a little bit more py we’re going to see the acceleration on it and how it shifts And everything oh yeah holy cow – oh my God. It’S so much faster holy crap, it’s! Moving now we’re already at 60 right there.
That’S like we. I bet you. We’Ve cut our 0 to 60 time down about half, I’m also going to be testing. The 0 to 60 out too, all right, so the number four tune’s a little bit peier, but I want to bump it up a notch. We’Re going to put it into the next performance tune, which is our fuel sipper tune that one gives us 65 horsepower, and that is number five so that one’s right after our daily driver so we’re going to bump it up to number five.
Now, oh yeah, it’s a little bit peier for sure. Definitely a lot more responsive on the throttle. When I before the hydr chip tuner, it was a lot less responsive, but this is a fuel sipper tune, so it’s not really meant for actually performance. So we’re going to bump into the first performance tune number eight tune which is 65 horsepower performance tune, uh same I mean it’s a little bit more cool and it’s a little bit faster.
But it’s not it’s. The same horsepower gain as the fuel sipper, so it’s not really like that. Much of a difference do think that this hydr chip has doubled. My sound it’s double as loud double as Rowdy like it is just everything all around is just double well, I want to try it now on the next. The hottest performance tun that they have, which is 80 horsepower, number nine tune.
This is our hot tune. This is the hottest horsepower. They got. 80 horsepower. Oh, my God.
It is fast boys holy crap, holy, that’s performance! It like throws you back in your seat. That’S crazy, holy ! Now, let’s open her up. Oh, my God holy, it’s so fast for a 73.
This thing moves boys holy. This thing rolls here we go ready: three 2, 1 and 60 same 0 to 60. I think it’s just cuz. It is hard to get to 60 on these things, boys now that you’all seen what the 73 is capable of with just a tuner, I’m going to compare it to my other two diesel trucks and show you guys exactly what the difference is and how much of A difference a tune makes so to start. The 73 is an actual tuner chip, meaning it goes directly onto the PCM.
With that said, the 60 and 67 power strokes are much different because to tune them. You only need to plug them into the OBD2 port. So to tune a 73 power stroke, it takes a little bit more work and effort. Now I want to compare the difference a tune made on my other two diesel trucks, starting with the 0 to 60 times and sound damn. I think we still have a mad boost Le guys.
Oh my God, it’s fast! Oh, it’s fast guys holy. Oh my God. It is so fast holy. The 060 is 9.
5. We went from 19.95, we shaved 10 seconds off our 060. Just from that, as you guys saw right there, the T and 5in turbo back made a huge difference on my 60 power stroke and I think it woke my truck up a lot more than the 73. I was able to shave an entire 10 seconds off my 0 to 60 time now for the 67 Power, Stroke, 5, 6, 7, eight, nine, exactly almost nine guys and oh my God, as you guys, saw right there.
I think this truck is the biggest difference with a 5-in turbo back in tune for sound. I was also able to shave it an entire 2.5 seconds off my 0 to 60 time. If you guys want to get this hydr chip tuner, you can in the description down below
