That’S that’s an interesting sound. I always exped that was a high whistle 5in exhaust and 4in exhaust. So I want you guys to get a good, listen on what this truck sounds like before. I installed this Extremely Loud, RDS, 9 blade turbo, it’s actually pretty nice. It’S a 2500 HD Crew, Cab, 6 and 1/2t bed.
This thing’s pretty much stock for the most part. So this is my friend’s truck his father passed away, unfortunately, and he inherited the stamax, but basically my friend dropped it off and said that he wants the truck done up as if his father would want it if he was still alive and of course, I agreed To take on this project, so the guys there at Ryan’s Diesel Service hooked us up with the 6 4 mm, 9 blade turbo. So it’s a 6466 guys is a 64mm 9 blade. This is going to be for the lmm build that Josh is doing. This will be a nice upgraded charger for daily driver tow rig.
It’S probably one of our most popular units that we sell as far as that goes um. Just really good. Overall, better drivability, uh, Towing power is phenomenal, so should make a really nice upgrade for this. Guy and when you’re doing performance modifications like that, just like I did here, you have have to tune it. The stock Garrett turbo in this is a 60 mm, in fact, so with us jumping it up to a 64 mm.
It’S very important that you get this thing tuned. This truck currently has a 4-in exhaust system on it. So it’ll be very interesting. I have a nine blade on my LBZ outside it’s an axle dumped 5in exhaust with 3in down pipe. So it’s super loud uh, maybe I’ll get that here on the channel as well.
So you guys can get a difference between the 5 in and the 4 in I’ll document, some of the steps, but I’m not going to do a full, install video, because I already have one done on YouTube. There’S no reason to do that. I just want to see what this thing sounds like anything, Duramax power, stroke or cumin related. They sell it and they will take care of you. As far as I’m concerned, they make some of the best turbos on the planet.
They’Re unmatched I’ve been to their shop. Dozens of times to do YouTube videos on their turbos and I’ve always been really ress with it. They do everything from A to Z from the center section, all the way up to the compressor housing. On a side note, I don’t know if this really matters, but when I remove the old turbo, I’m going to basically put it in the same packaging that Ryan’s Diesel Service had I’m just going to put it all back together, put it in the box and store It away you just never know either you could sell it, I mean you can keep it for a future, build whatever, but at least you’ll have it it’s put away. It’S clean.
It’S not just sitting underneath your toolbox somewhere rolling around getting knocked over so yeah. Here it is, it also comes with a vein position sensor, which is pretty cool. It’S going to come with all the gaskets included that you’ll need, but this isn’t a simple bolt-on part I’ll. Tell you that right now these are a bear if you’ve never done one. It’S going to take you probably a couple days and then I guess at this time we’re going to go ahead and pull out the old turbo and get this thing slammed in there.
So, let’s cue, the Tim lapse: right now, okay. So it’s been several hours now, but I was able to go ahead and get it installed now all we got to do. I just put the battery terminals back on the batteries. I have not started it yet. I still got to put the tire on I like to take the tire off to just get in there ease of access.
Unfortunately, when I did this job, I snapped manifold bolt. You how it goes Lu. I had a spare one in the garage, so we threw that one on actually that one’s from an lb7 believe it or not, not going to lie. This is not a fun job. For me.
I usually don’t like to take these jobs on. I hate them, but it’s worth it in the long run, and hopefully we don’t have any leaks. That’S one thing that I always worry about when I do. These jobs, of course, is when I fire it up. If there’s any leaks in the system, especially the drain tube, which I’m always concerned about, if it’s leaking from the turbo drain tube, that goes to the block, we’re going to have big issues, cuz, I’m going to have to pull the turbo out again, but either way Fire in the hole here goes nothing.
I can’t wait to hear what it sounds like when it starts it’s going to sound totally different and, of course, when the engine finally warms up, it’s going to sound even more different. So, like I said, I’m going to go and get the tire on put it on the ground. We go and start it up, but we are at reduced engine power right now and uh. Let see really quick what we’re getting. I’M pretty sure.
It’S probably a wiring harness that just got unplugged fuel pressure regulator; okay, perfect, we’ll go ahead and plug that back. In that sucks, it’s the next day, I don’t even know where to start. I had to replace this part this. The fuel pressure regulator pain in the butt to get to, but I tore everything down I slamming Parts in there and unfortunately, I pressed against this sensor hard enough to crack it and it wasn’t making contact and that’s what was causing the code. That’S why it was running so rough man that was running rough.
Actually, you saw some of the white smoke come out and the truck was kind of popping yeah it’ll freak out. It’S amazing what Electronics will actually do to your engine and I’m curious. How will this sound, of course, I still got to do the vein position relearn on the turbo. I guess the moment that we’re waiting for it’s probably not going to sound super cool when it starts in the beginning, just because the truck is cold, but once it warms up a little bit, we’ll give her a few little Reds. But we got to get her to engine temp, so here goes nothing.
The engine code was actually still on on the dash, so I went ahead and just cleared it we’re completely done with the truck everything’s, all dialed in ready to go truck fired up. Fine. I took it on a little test drive yesterday I mean everything is just a okay, zero leaks. So at this point, since the guy needs to his truck back, I’m going to go pick him up from work right now and we’re going to go ahead and get his first reaction on video on his truck and what it sounds like. I think he’s going to absolutely love it.
He has no idea. I just told him that she’s, a whistly girl and she’s definitely more responsive. So, let’s head over there right now pick him up and then uh get back to the house. It’S time you’ll see the RDS logo. I think, if you stood to the side here, you’ll see it right there.
I was going to powder coat it, but I mean I couldn’t match your pipe here. So that looks awesome. That’S kind of a tough color to match, but I guess we could do something like that in the future find the correct color there we’ll get your first reaction on the startup. It is a little cold, so it’s probably not going to sound cool, not as cool as it would. If it was warmer and not raining.
That’S true. I agree yeah, it’s hoodie, hoodie weather right now, all right here we go. That’S awesome! That’S aome! You hear it.
You hear the the veins yeah, that’s awesome, so was that in tune two, that’s two two makes two makes the cool noise, the haird dryer noise um right now. I don’t know if you guys can see it but vein position right now is at 62 %. Bottom left, you guys can see there. I like to monitor vein position and then, if you were to turn it down, it just goes down to zero. Veins are closed, pretty simple and – and it’s also a good piece of Mind knowing that you’re uh your tuning is working yeah, it’s adjusting that sounds.
I can’t help it. That is super cool. Can I rip on it if you could give her a little subtle rev? It’S been sitting in the garage, that’s that’s an interesting, sound yeah. I was expeced that was a high whistle yeah go ahead.
Just kind of you can lean into it a little bit, not not crazy, though just so you can hear it. That’S awesome. It’S like a jet prepare for getting ready to take off we’re also going to compare it with the LBZ. Can you pull forward just a little bit all right, we’re going to go ahead and rev this girl up so loud? I love it’s, not smokey, really clean.
All right, you ready, that’s awesome. Woo, it’s got a nice mix, it’s got the the nice whistle and then the growl behind it yes got like that Diesel throatiness and you still got that nice cool bgt, whistle drivability in general, is just super easy. I the regular drive, it’s, it’s got a nice sound. The windows are up, it’s, it’s not overbearing it. It’S very smooth.
You can drive it normally like just a normal person, but if you want to play you can play you can get after it. You can get rowdy, so my dad bought this truck uh brand new. I mean he had done a lot of research. I mean he spent years this. This was his dream truck, oh, so he bought it from the dealership.
He bought it brand new yeah, like we still, I I have the folder. He left it in the truck um. I’Ve been going through that, looking at all the stuff that he had upgrades that he had done and and I and and he bought it for like $ 45,000 brand new in 2008 – is the paper still in there. No, I have it at home, oh yeah. I have I’m just going through the file to see exactly what he did, but he was.
He was very particular on what he wanted. I remember him telling me uh. He drove semi- trucks for years and and really fell in love with the diesel. The diesel motor – and so he told me, he’d, been telling me for years. I want a diesel truck, I want an Allison Transmission and he went through all of it, and so he he actually um found this truck in Tennessee um.
He drove down there and then drove it right from the dealership back so I mean he this. This was his dream truck and I remember all the stories he told me on what he wanted to do with it, and so now it’s just me trying to honor what my dad didn’t get to finish with this truck but yeah. He bought it brand new and – and this is just one way, that I’m trying to honor his memory is doing it, how he, how he wanted It upgraded and all that. So I could imagine the day when you brought it back to Michigan and showed you the truck. Oh, it was awesome.
You ever watch my Channel at all. I did show him uh at the end uh, so he passed away in September and at the end we’d been watching starting to watch Diesel videos did. Did he hear turbo the the six, the N9 blade? Did he ever get a chance to hear like the turbo videos that he did yeah? How do you?
How would you have felt if he was standing here listening to that exhaust sing? No it’s funny, though, because you know in his older age he he his heart was really soft, so I, like, I know, he’d, be crying right now, that’s that’s! Where he’d be at right now, he’d be like this is so awesome he’d be be able to hold himself back but yeah. He he’d love it for sure. He know the Lord oh yeah, that’s cool.
That was that was one of our last conversations he had uh. He got sick, we took him to the hospital and uh he. He had a an issue uh with his esophagus, so he had esophageal cancer. Part of the hospice plan is to take him off from food, and, and so we did that and a couple hours later he had like his body was just surviving at that point, but he was able to wake up and have a conversation, and that was one Of the first things he woke up at 4:00 in the morning, and so him and I are talking and he’s going through his list. This is what you need to do.
Take care of your mother. Do these things and then hey you’re good to go you’re right with God right? Yes, so they had that conversation. So we had that conversation. He was good to go.
I know how he lived a good Godly life, but you just you know in my heart. I wanted to make sure that he was good, so that’s that was good. I appreciate you sharing that with us man. Hopefully we can get this truck back on the channel sometime, but um enjoy the truck. I will absolutely be fun all right so before we end off with this we’re going to go ahead and start up the LBZ Duramax, it’s got a 5-in exhaust, it’s axle dump.
It does in fact have an RDS 64 mm turbo. Exactly like this, with the nine blade um, it’s going to sound very similar one’s going to sound deeper than the other. I want you guys to. Let me know after we get done in the comments. What you think sounds the best via startup um High Rev.
Overall, just idle, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. So let me go ahead and start that up right now, we’ll kind of do a side, by- side comparison. This will be fun. Oh, it definitely sounds. I think it sounds better but like like.
I said when you’re driving it like when I drive it to Wisconsin and stuff, it’s terrible. It’S just like I mean it sounds good and whatever, but like that that constant hours, four four to 6 hours, yeah, it’s it gets kind of old and then uh. Let’S go ahead and start this thing off: let’s hear it yeah I like it it still. It still has that loud, like girth, like throy noise to it. I love that blend.
It’S it’s smooth. This is awes, I’m going to be a I’m going to be a toddler for the next few months. Slam you’re going be Tod the whole time you own this truck man. It is so much fun. Let us know in the comments guys.
What do you like? The best the 4in or the 5-in exhaust my opinion, I think the 5 in definitely sounds better with the nine blade in it: 5 in exhaust and 4in exhaust Applause,. Now.
