Welcome back! Behind me, we have a 2019 F250 sporting the 6.7 Powerstroke. The issue? It’s just not fast enough and lacks those cool sounds. Enter weight reduction. For off-road use only, of course. But if you want your 6.7 to go faster and produce some black smoke, here’s your guide.
The first step in this transformation journey begins with tuning. This is the foundation of enhancing your truck’s performance and sound. Before unplugging anything, plug in your Easy Link or chosen tuner and tune your truck. Make sure your vehicle’s battery is fully charged to prevent any interruption during the process. With the truck on, load your app, click on the vehicle, then ECU profiles, and install the desired tune. Follow the steps, turning the truck off and on as needed. Choose from various tunes based on your truck’s needs. Whether you’re looking for a mild boost or a significant power increase, the right tune will set the stage for the modifications to come.
While waiting for the tunes to install, locate the sensors: one here, another along the pipe, and several more upfront. These sensors are part of the emissions system, and unplugging them is necessary for the modifications we’re about to make. However, it’s crucial to ensure that you’re doing this in a controlled environment and for off-road purposes only. Unplug them once tuning is complete, and you’re ready to drop the exhaust. A quick tip: spray exhaust and EGR bolts with PB Blaster to ease removal. This lubricant will help prevent any bolts from snapping, which could complicate the process.
Exhaust Teardown
Now that the tuning is underway and sensors are disconnected, it’s time to get your hands dirty with the exhaust system. Working on the exhaust, unplug the necessary connectors and remove the three back bolts. Take your time with this step, as rushing could lead to stripped bolts or other complications. Upfront, ensure you’re on the bolt side, not the welded nut side. This is crucial to avoid unnecessary damage. Once removed, the new delete pipe with three bolts and two hangers replaces the old system. Ensure that everything is aligned properly to prevent leaks and ensure optimal performance.
With installation complete, it’s time for a preliminary check. Inspect the system for any obvious issues or leaks. If all’s well, start her up! The first start will give you an initial sense of the modifications. Listen closely for any unusual sounds or vibrations that might indicate a problem. If everything sounds good, you’ve successfully completed a major step in the process.
The next major component in the deletion process is the EGR cooler. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is designed to reduce emissions, but it can also hinder performance. To tackle this component, drain the left-side radiator. This step is necessary to prevent coolant from spilling when you remove the EGR cooler. Remove the intake and carefully spray sticky bolts with PB Blaster. Avoid rushing and breaking bolts, which could lead to drilling and tapping—a major hassle. Taking your time here can save a lot of frustration and additional work down the line.
Blocker Plates and EGR Cooler Removal
Now, it’s time to install blocker plates. These plates are crucial as they prevent exhaust gases from re-entering the intake. Locate the bolts and remove the EGR cooler. This involves several bolts, a coolant line, and a bracket. Ensure nothing remains connected to the cooler. The removal of the EGR cooler will help improve airflow and performance. Once everything is out, it’s a good idea to clean the surrounding area to ensure no debris enters the engine.
With the EGR cooler out, there are a few final touches to ensure everything is secure and ready for action. Tie up loose lines with zip ties. This step not only prevents damage but also makes the engine bay look tidy. Reroute the coolant line, reattach the air intake, and fill with coolant. It’s important to check for air bubbles and top off as needed. Air pockets can cause overheating, so take your time to ensure all air is expelled from the system.
After letting the truck sit for about 12 hours, it’s time to refill and start the truck. This period allows any remaining air bubbles to work their way out. Start the engine and let it idle, paying close attention to any warning lights or unusual sounds. If issues arise, switch tunes. In our case, a 40-horse tune fixed throttle issues and cleared the check engine light. This highlights the importance of having a couple of tune options to find the perfect match for your modifications. Remember, ensure all plugs are reconnected to avoid limp modes. This is crucial for maintaining the truck’s driveability and ensuring all systems are functioning correctly.
Once complete, the truck sounds better than stock. The deep, throaty roar is a testament to the enhanced airflow and power. Tuning and deleting not only enhance performance but also eliminate the need for DEF, saving money in the long run. The improved throttle response and increased horsepower make the truck feel more responsive and powerful. This process is straightforward and significantly improves the truck’s sound and performance.
